Gavins mix has proven such a favorite, in fact, that it sent Populette back into the studio to refine the original so they stand beside one another better. We can think of no greater compliment than that!
It’s been quite a year for NYC’s Populette. After storming onto the scene with their debut 12“ for Throne of Blood back in March, Max Pask and Andrew „Wiz“ Potter have been keeping busy and making noise. Between frequent DJ gigs in NYC and beyond, marathon sessions in their new studio, and remixes for Harkin & Raney, Trap.Avoid, and Bibi Tanga & The Selenites, Populette have staked out a slice of dance music terrain as uniquely their own. Forward-looking but deeply rooted, Populette is all about dancefloor energy and analog synths, deep, druggy, and not for the fainthearted. That’s why it was no surprise to Throne of Blood when they suggested that perhaps the Wizard himself, Gavin Russom (DFA’s Delia & Gavin, Black Meteoric Star, and Crystal Ark), might be keen to do a remix. Completed while on the road with LCD Soundsystem (as both opening act and tour keyboardist) Gavin opted for cosmic grandiosity rather than dancefloor impact, turning in a mind-melting 12 minute ambient mix that Populette describes as sounding like „Jan Hammer and Klaus Schultze jamming together in arpeggio heaven.“
