The Ghoulish EP marks the beginning of something new for two veterans of Throne of Blood. Populette's Maxime Pasquier has teamed up with Romain Rouffiac a/k/a Remain and this is the first single to emerge from this trans-Atlantic collaboration. Working together in Brooklyn and Paris as well as on their own, these two masters of dancefloor darkness found that the sum of their collaboration was indeed greater than its parts. "Ghoulish" marks the first of two EPs they produced over the past few months. "Discomfort" will drop soon on Remain's Paris-based Meant Records imprint backed by remixes from Marc Pinol, DJ Chloe, and Troy Pierce. As a first statement of purpose, "Ghoulish" leaves little to the imagination with its propulsive rhythms and needling synths. For a remix Maxime & Remain looked to an old friend in the form of Klas "Sasse" Lindblad of Moodmusic fame. Working from his studio in Berlin, Sasse tweaked the elements of the storming original, adding a warmth and motorik funk all his own. "Unmanned" serves as a perfect counterpoint. Where "Ghoulish" trades in unmitigated dancefloor energy, "Unmanned" is anxious and uneasy, recalling spooked-out classics like Marc Houle's "Bay of Figs." Get The Curse Records mainstays, Darabi turn the track on its head with their stripped back, syrupy slow remix awash in static and noise
