* big, bad and heavy! two of pinch’s biggest dance floor bangers, remixed by one of uk dubstep’s hardest hitters, kromestar. guaranteed rewinds. * ‘the boxer’ first appeared on tectonic back in 2010, fusing grime and dubstep with tribal drums and tearing squarewave bass. kromestar stays true to the original but switches his stance to swing hard with a left hook, southpaw style. after a moody build up, the intro breaks away into a brief moment of calm, before bass comes out fighting, throwing knock out punches hard and fast. tried and tested dancefloor damage of the highest order. * flip then for an equally dangerous remix of pinch’s deep medi release ‘swish’, from back in 2011. simple, effective and deadly, kromestar gives this classic an update, setting it up for another few years of wheel-ups

‘c5’ refers to cold explosives and makes for a perfect title for this stark, cold rhythm. a circling melodic synth line sets a moody context before the floor drops out and an industrial strength sub drives things forward at 130bpm. deep, hard, dark, original. exceptional quality from ishan sound and hodge.
flip for a 140bpm excursion from ishan sound & muttley, melding elements of trap, grime and dubstep meticulously to form an engaging sonic that is both fuel for the dancefloor as well as providing introspective qualities for bass weight meditation. ‘still smoking’ sums it up appropriately.

‘black lotus’ follows walton’s inclusion on tectonic’s landmark 100th release – riko dan’s ‘hard food’ ep, plus the ‘praying mantis’/ ‘koto riddim’ 12” (also on tectonic) and the ‘taiko’ ep on kaizen – the latter two of which hinted at the album’s sound, but didn’t fully prepare us for the brilliance to come. abstract electronics, grime, dubstep and new styles that don’t even have a name yet coalesce perfectly on this classic in the making. it finds walton at peak power, reaching just as far (if not more so) than anything on the pan, different circles, boxed or tectonic catalogues for pure futurism and new-terrain-traversing brilliance.

following last years dangerously good depatterning lp, ipman returns to tectonic to deliver his latest instalment in bass-driven technoid mutations. constrict jumps straight into the deep end at 140bpm, diving head first into pulsing waves of warping, dynamic synth layers swimming back up to the surface for air. as the intro build peaks, the track effortlessly strikes when the bass drops in, charging the techno synth interplay with a sort of 3/4-step type rhythm shaping the movements. impeccable dance floor music that sits in an undefined zone between the worlds of techno, dubstep and somewhere yet defined. flip then for running man, which sees a sharp drop in tempo, bringing the speed down to 120bpm but maintaining the energetic build of constrict. starting from an almost empty space, running man takes an upward momentum, building and layering percussion and sonic textures as the heat of the chase takes full effect. dark and deadly, this is one for fans of sci-fi sonics and dread vibrations.

burly, uk-styled rave tackle from berlin’s phon.o for tectonic after spending the last few years exploring subsets of garage-techno on 50 weapons. clearly carving towards tectonic’s ruder ‘floor criteria, he plays out the dank, shadow-boxing 2-step drums and swooping subs of mercurial next to the aggier grime slap of u8 phunk for the berlin scallies, and yokes some splintered breaks into a submerged jungle-techno chassis with bell blender.

bristol born producer guido releases his second album *moods of future joy* through home town label tectonic recordings. alongside joker and gemmy, guido completed bristols purple trinity generation of dubstep producers, whose collective sound took the worldwide underground scene by storm in 2009.

following on from his dynamic debut lp on tectonic last year, civilization, and an excellent contribution to this years tectonic plates volume 4 in the form of *kerplunk*, distal returns with a solid 4 track ep that spans the full wide range of his production ability.

hot on the tails of his much discussed contribution to the latest edition of tectonic plates volume 4, talk, and following up from his debut ep on tectonic last autumn, the eponymously titled decibel ep, jay fotaine, aka decibel, comes correct with a powerhouse duo of techno-infused 140bpm cuts.

>this mix was the perfect chance to sit down with pinch & bring together a sonic which we both feel we have been working towards for a while, albeit from very different angles. in my opinion the dance music climate in the uk is enjoying a healthy & extremely interesting transitional period one which i would draw parallels to the 93/94 proto era when people were literally making up the rules as they went along. this mix is a ode to that time & our attempt at throwing some ideas out there, with the hope of sparking some imaginations & pushing things further forward< - mumdance
