as the d edge label clocks up release number 24, it turns to the phil hinter ensemble for a fantastic three track package that is filled with fresh house vibes. phil hinter ensemble is a joint project by phil s main pillars philogresz and german simon hinter. they have ties with labels like their own phil, love unlimited vibes and of course d-edge. previous eps have gone down well around the world and simon hinter s smart grooves and sample based fill-ins blends with the wombastic bass and shivering synth lines of philogresz perfectly. up first is the owl, a squelchy, synthetic house track with lively drums and chords and magical trumpets all making for a party starting track. it is perfectly arranged and expertly musical, unlike much of today s plastic and sample heavy sounds. in the air then gets even more playful with glossy synth stabs, rumbling bass and diva vocals all bouncing along in a charismatic style that is full of colour. struggle then gets intimate and final with scurrying little percussive sounds, burst of afro vocal, down low sine waves and icy snares all making for a perfectly seductive minimal techno brew

youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of howes (the solo project of manchester-based john howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride. having released a more house-oriented 12” on melodic a couple of years ago, his debut album proper is a record that is as expressive as it is cohesive. it’s a release that floats between nocturnal stillness and insomniac driven intensity. the shift, howes says, “comes from the forced and narrow nature of a lot of electronic music. most modern electronic music to me is too safe in terms of ambition, sound design and intention.”

while jamming and improvising, their way of working invented itself: programming and playing everything live while recording directly to 5 minute audio tapes. the whole post process of mixing and editing is cut out and the results are vivid snapshots of improvised live tracks organised into little stories. combining these stories results in an electronic trip through a galaxy of sound, experienced from the front seat of an old russian spaceship with a view to kill.

in this e.p, phobos (fear), every artist expresses his most disturbing consciousness, giving us an awesome dose of techno without scruples or contemplations. it is a sensitive group project which is drawn directly into our subconscious. the track phobos speaks from strong foundations and dark shades that put soundtrack to water rojas hallucinations (rojas is the illustrator of this e.p.). in erratic chaos, the composer takes us amid the wrong road map of disorder. phobonica is the end of a tortured mind which transmutes its inner voices in dark melodies, snares and drums. at last, acid panic is a dark acid track built from the fear which follows a tension line made with abstract melodies.

the fourth and final edition of schleiben is an extra special one, bringing forth acollaborative project between colin potter of nurse with wound fame, not waving artist alessio natalizia and brain machine s guido zen. furthermore the series ties with dusseldorf remain, as osnabruck based producer niklas rehme-schluter lines the flip with the beautiful ambient touches of his cass project. the two part efforts from potter, natalizia and zen offer a perfect marriage of methods, with percussion hinting at and techno, while the constant drone influx and disintegration grab your attention, overlapping with rhythmic repetition deeper and deeper. the cass contributions see tracks from the german artists cassette only hiding place album presented on vinyl for the first time and fit snugly into the sonic ethos explored over the previous schleiben releases

herva, of delsin, kontra, mos and all city fame, offers another set of forward-thinking dancefloor bombs. across four tracks this young italian demonstrates his unique interpretation of the past and the future again and again. herva is the artist name of herve atsè corti. he was born in 1991, and has been surrounded by music from the beginning thanks to his family. he made a reputation for himself early on at high school as a talented drummer, but, intrigued by electronic music he decided to start making his own beats with a laptop. a few years later bosconi records released his early productions, both as herva both and as life’s track (a side project with dukwa). he is also part of tru west, a collective he founded with mass prod, rufus and raffaele amenta.

with a musical carreer spanning over 10 years in different fields of the industry, this extraordinary ep is his first release in almost 3 years, following his album on exit records. dan is the experienced artist who has a very clear idea about what he wants and what he puts out there. it takes a lot of time and involvement for him to develop his music - in this very instance, both tracks are performed on a hardware sampler loaded with snippets of an impromptu live set he distilled to perfection. these two tracks have been waiting for the right time and context to surface, and we can confidently say that time and context have finally arrived.

founding sound traveller dj patrique collaborates with clarence on one track to be released on the vinyl edition only. clarence brandon is obviously inspired by the detroit heritage as all tracks bear the soul of this influential city. by using an uplifting track build-up, forward moving rhythms and inspiring melodies, all tracks are well suited for the lovers of fine techno and house. gracefully placing subtle sounds but never loosing sight of the dance floor, clarence diligently produced the first ever physical sound travels release.

following the first release on my lit label is from the quite brilliantly named, bebop & rocksteady. this might be a new name to some but the guys behind this project are lukes anger & ben mallott. after playing catalunya throughout the year i felt this tune needed to see a release, its just so f***ing good. its response on the dancefloor was devastating. anyone who has seen me dj recently would remember this one in my set, it gets a massive reaction once that drop comes in. i will still be playing this all year, a proper slice of good wonky techno. -addison groove

editions mego is happy to announce a vinyl reissue of the long out-of-print and impossibly rare final harry pussy album, the monumental >lets build a pussy<. originally released in 1998 after the band broke up, this has always been an elusive release.

for release #2 kontrapunkt makes a journey into different fields of electronic music. french based producer octave diesis delivers an album full of melancholic yet thoughtful neoclassical songs. the songs live mostly from the enigmatic piano melodies paired with some well-thought synthesizer sounds he composed. expect ambient environments and dramatic, soothing layers.

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

al sunny is a young composer emerging from the french soul music scene. soon after learning the guitar, he started composing and became involved in numerous projects and collaborations. al has been influenced by pop, rock, and electronic music, always with a foundation in the “black” and “soul” sound.

from portland’s burgeoning music scene comes a creative statement in the form of “tease”, the full length collaborative album by singer/songwriter blossom and producer hot16. meticulously thought out in every detail, “tease” shows the work of two sophisticated artists making their mark with an expertly written, performed, and produced lp that will undoubtedly find its way into your home and heart.

we are seemingly headed towards dark and confusing times. the tension inside of the people is rising so instead of putting more gasoline to the fire and fueling the rage i submit to you these sounds of peace. not black music or white music. not borders or class. just music. it’s time to stop labeling music, just as it is time to stop labeling humans as 1st class and 2nd class citizens. if you can ignore my broken voice and if you could only look past my music’s imperfections, you would feel me instead of hearing me and maybe then you could get a small glimpse of the hope that the people feel when they are at my concerts and understand the idea that many great men and women before me like bob marley and john lennon had, that we are all one. the idea that had brought hope and countless others. the hope that makes them scream: peace forever. limited to 500 copies only! emma ogosi has worn a lot of different hats in his career: former air force officer, guitarist with benin-based pogo limited, and husband and manager of nigerian reggae superstar, evi-edna ogholi. in 1981, he donned a sequined cowboy hat and released nobody knows. nobody knows is arguably the nigeria’s best – and perhaps only – disco country album.

grill by gbubemi amas is as smooth as the red cardigan artfully slung around his shoulders on the cover. whether he is running through the scales on a cover version of ‘fire and rain’, or trying on his calypso highlife moves on ‘ereyon’, you know amas is a man with a smooth line for every occasion.

brand new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion. obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the cherubim & seraphim and baptist churches of the ikeja and isale eko districts. a couple of them were founder-members of the eko brass band, they’ve played with pretty much all the key nigerian reggae artists. the tunes are mostly traditional yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. the songs are mostly original, sung in yoruba (though jomido is an egun song from the badagry area of lagos state).

michigan native dj soko is part of a long line of great technical djs, musical innovators, curators and those who broke key artists and introduced acts that forever changed the landscape of the music scene. sokos ear and ability to put emcees in position for them to shine over the perfect production is never more evident than it is on his debut project released on his imprint left of center. dj soko uses his years coming up in the detroit scene, his experiences djing in his current home (the planet of brooklyn, ny) then blends both of those worlds together seamlessly. the end result is a gritty, boom bap rap album that is equally as soulful and introspective as it is rooted in a blue collar lyrical hip-hop aesthetic. *domino effect* is ultimately brought together by sokos deft cuts and scratches which elevate each composition and make them resonate with listeners even further.
