jimi tenor’s soundtrack for the film “cinema dadaab” by kati juurus.

the sound recordings for jimi tenors sähkö movie got lost in mid 90s. it was only last spring warp records retrurned all the demo tapes jimi sent them in 90s. happily the sähkö soundtrack parts were on those tapes too. we decided to compile a soundtrack ep from them for mika vainios memorial in oslo in september 2018. all the tracks are from the actual movie scenes.

a chance encounter at university during the acid house summer of ’88 and subsequent bonding over baby ford’s “oochy koochy” established a life-long friendship between leicester lads, jimi o’callaghan and al green. inspired by the sounds of detroit, early ny house like murk and masters at work and the emerging uk sounds of lfo, orbital and aphex twin, the pair began djing and making music as the wild geese. their first ep, “the wild geese ep”, was released in 1994 on their own giddy goose recordings imprint. the guys pressed 500 copies and, with jimi’s connections made interning with pete tong’s ffrr, sold copies direct to london shops. the record sported packaging designed to look like an american 12” and an accompanying press release attributed the ep to a fictitious dj duo hailing from wisconsin. rave reviews followed and a distribution deal was struck with vital uk, who produced and sold another 500 copies worldwide. another ep followed a year later. sadly, plans for a third ep on the label never materialized, but the pair remain close to this day. 24 years later we are honored to reintroduce this genre-defying, uniquely forward-thinking ep to today’s dance floors.

named after the tenor saxophone, actually, jimi tenor is not just jimi tenor - he s as well jimi keys, jimi flute, jimi vox and jimi composer. yeah, he is, as a multi-instrumentalist and music master in general, all of this! but wait: active since the mid-80 s he s also jimi legend. and if you overlook his whole oeuvre then finally you will find out that on top of all of this he s jimi genius.

imogen have stumbled across a rare gem here, presenting some previously unheard liquid funk jams from the lesser known chicago pioneer james perri. some of his jams as jimi polo are perennial classics, while his time spent in soul ii soul and elsewhere are testament to his gifts, but this particular set of recordings from the 90s have lain in wait for their time to shine. you can hear his skills as a session musician and arranger coming through in abundance on this warm, grooving, acid jazz inflected ep. 70s theme is a sparse, moody jazz funk cut, while brother beware is a smooth, sultry slice of message soul. express yourself is the truly uplifting slice of the pie, and it will chime just fine with any lovers of that classic soul ii soul sound.

finnish legends and everything-but-grey eminences of electronic music, jimi tenor and freestyle man revive their dormant partnership on this four track ep for studio barnhus, jam-packed with classic drum machine funk, congenial synth lines and jimi’s unmistakable lead vocals and flute-playing. the sleepover ep is fuelled by the two maestros’ mutual love for new jersey house music and pyjama parties, as well as musical wisdom gained from numerous collaborations in the past, ranging back to some fabled mid-90s sähkö releases. live show booking now! artwork by robin ekemark.

jimi tenor featuring impostor orchestra lp, exocosmos, is more than a decade s worth of sessions emerging from a parallel cosmos. sometimes the meetings take place in a living room, sometimes inside an electronic sequencer. fields of rhythms have emerged through the hands of children playing sticks. the composer s pen has been a conduit of the horizon where past and present choose their sides. the lp which is immediately intimate yet metamorphose into massive, the search for a magic moment has been profound. tribulation and delight are equally true in exocosmos.

cosmic relief was jimi tenor s return to his home label and original one man band setup after busy warp years. the sound is ease breathing and the compositions are as sweet as only jimi can do. ***** in most of the reviews back in 2001.

the cocoon recordings very own inhouse compilation series dots and pearls is back once again and takes us on a tour to the expected sounds of the upcoming spring season. frankfurt based christian burkhardt starts the selection of four exclusive and previously unreleased tracks. his -karambolage- breathes spring air and creates an early summer feeling par excellence. this tune will even turn gray and rainy april weather into bright sunlight. on spot with playful and positive harmonies and a very subtle 80 s synthie-pop flavour. this one here definitely makes us want more! next in line is argy, one of our most long standing cocoon recordings artists. his -how late it was, how late- has an undeniable 80s retro charm, too however it follows a completely different direction than burkhardts -karambolage-. this one refers strongly to an early 80s acid sound and reminds us of great productions such as -on and on- by jesse saunders. we cannot tell how far argy s reminiscences goes back but for the ones who know: -how late it was, how late- will bring you back to the great times of labels like rams horn and their rational youth s -dancing on the berlin- wall. brave and surprising at the same time and above all: -übercool-! with -baroon- by markus fix follows another acid track - however, this one has a far more epic flavour full of warm analogue strings and based on a hypnotic arrangement. fix -baroon- is defintely less retro than argys and burkhardts contributions - a deep tech house gem made for the first sunrises of the upcoming allnighter open airs. with -euphrasia- jim jules accelerates slightly but goes also deeper at the same time. his production follows the cinematic mood of markus fix but paints a darker picture. this one takes us on an intensive musical journey. deep, slightly gloomy and extremely hypnotic, -euphrasia- is almost captivating and bewitching and a perfect conclusion for this highly diversified fourtracker.
